Shopify, WooCommerce or Odoo eCommerce: choosing the right store for an Indian brand

Three good platforms, three different trade-offs. How we help Indian brands choose between Shopify, WooCommerce and Odoo eCommerce, based on how they actually run.

There is no single best e-commerce platform. There is a best fit for how a business runs: who manages the store, where stock and invoices live, and how much the brand wants to own its technology. For Indian brands, three platforms come up most often.

Shopify

Shopify is a hosted platform. You do not manage servers, security or updates, and the store is fast and reliable out of the box.

  • Strengths: polished checkout, a large app ecosystem, themes your team can edit, and excellent stability during sales
  • In India: Shopify Payments is not available, so stores use Indian gateways such as Razorpay or PayU, and Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of the gateway's charge when an external gateway is used
  • Watch for: monthly app subscriptions that add up, and GST invoicing or ERP sync that usually needs an app or custom integration

WooCommerce

WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a store. The software is free; you pay for hosting and any premium extensions.

  • Strengths: full ownership, unlimited flexibility, and content and commerce on one site
  • In India: mature plugins for Indian gateways, GST invoices and shipping aggregators
  • Watch for: you are responsible for hosting, updates, security and speed, and a store with many plugins needs regular care

Odoo eCommerce

Odoo's store is part of the ERP itself.

  • Strengths: stock, orders, invoices, accounting and the website share one database, so there is nothing to sync
  • In India: GST invoices come from the same system that keeps your accounts
  • Watch for: fewer ready-made themes and marketing apps, so design and conversion features take more deliberate work

A quick way to decide

  • If marketing speed and a polished storefront matter most, and your team is small, start with Shopify and integrate it with your ERP.
  • If content and SEO drive your sales and you want to own everything, choose WooCommerce, and budget for proper hosting and maintenance.
  • If you already run Odoo and your catalogue, stock and B2B pricing are complex, Odoo eCommerce removes a whole layer of integration.

Whichever you choose, the catalogue behind it matters more than the platform. A store with thin product data loses sales on any platform.
